Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney has hinted that the current government shutdown could last into 2019. The federal government partially shut down on Friday evening after the Senate could not reach an agreement on a continuing resolution that included $5.7 billion in funding for President Trump’s border wall.
In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Mulvaney said “It’s very possible this shutdown will go beyond the 28th and into the new Congress.” Mulvaney also said that Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is stalling on shutdown negotiations.
The Senate reconvenes on December 27th, but it is unclear whether or not any agreement can be negotiated before the start of 2019. President Trump has demanded funding for the border wall in exchange for signing the continuing resolution. Democrats have refused to entertain the idea of giving President Trump any money for the wall. In fact, Nancy Pelosi herself said that she would shut down the government “forever” before compromising with President Trump on the wall.
Personally, I’m fine with the way Trump has handled this latest episode of “Democrat Shutdown Theater.” Americans across the board have demanded increased border security and decreased immigration. In fact, President Trump’s stance on border security is one of the main issues that won him the presidency in 2016. Border security remains a winning issue for President Trump even in the midst of a government shutdown.
Moreover, President Trump’s hard line against the Democrats on this issue has once again shown the American public that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer care more about foreign criminals than actual citizens. Rather than working with President Trump on the border, Democrats have instead adopted the path of #TheResistance. The Democrat position on border security is to fight President Trump every step of the way regardless of what he asks for. It’s the same position they took during the DACA shutdown last year.
Unfortunately for the Democrats Americans have grown fed up with #Resist. The current government shutdown will have the same disastrous outcome for Democrats that the last one did.
It’s nothing less than they deserve.
