I Actually Agree With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez Congress

The current Democratic Socialist flavor of the month, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Dimwit-People’s Republic of New York) reacted to news of the latest government shut down yesterday with an outrageously outraged tweet.

Occasional-Cortex followed up with a response to a tweet from one of the braying Socialist jackals who follows her.

Putting aside the fact that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is trying to paint herself as a “working class” member of Congress (spoiler alert: she’s not), let’s talk about the premise of her tweets.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is basically asserting that tying congressional salaries to a government shut down would result in fewer government shut downs over silly partisan things like “border security” or “protecting the American people that sent you to Congress in the first place.” The unspoken subtext of Occasio-Cortez’s remarks, of course, is that evil, rich Republicans are the ones shutting down the government every time they don’t get their way. Even though this current shut down, just like the DACA shut down last year, has been caused purely by Democrat intransigence.

Believe it or not, I actually agree with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on this one. Chalk this up as the first intelligent thing she’s said since she was elected (but not yet inaugurated).

Congressional representatives and senators are paid ridiculous amounts of money to ostensibly do their job of representing the people. Very often, however, we find that Congress does anything but represent the will of the people that elected them. Many times elected officials on both sides of the aisle spend their time in Washington telling the peasants what’s best for them and lining their pockets with “campaign contributions” from lobbyists and other hangers on.

Tie congressional salaries to government shut downs, and you change the equation. Now you have elected officials thinking twice about whether or not it’s a good idea to shut down the government or just build the damn wall. Maybe they’ll go back to their constituents and find out what they want. Maybe not. Either way, you’ve got a good chance of forcing needlessly intransigent representatives (ie, Democrats) to actually come to the table and at least attempt to avoid a government shut down.

Not only that, you’ve made life just a little bit more uncomfortable for everyone in Washington. That’s something I think we can all get behind.
