Christine Blasely Ford, the Leftist California professor accusing SCOTUS nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh of attempted rape, has finally responded to Senator Chuck Grassley’s invitation to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday. In a letter sent to Senator Grassley by her lawyers, Ford has demanded a full FBI investigation into her claims before she will agree to testify before the committee.
Or, to put it another way:
A full FBI investigation would likely delay the vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation indefinitely. Certainly the vote would be delayed at least until after the primaries. Ford’s demand is likely to be a non-starter for Grassley, who has said he will cancel Monday’s hearing if Ford refuses to play ball.
I think this certainly qualifies as refusing to play ball.
Dianne Feinstein’s gambit to derail Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court was always a Hail Mary with little chance of success. She sought to smear Brett Kavanaugh as a rapist just like the Democrats (with help from the GOPe) had done with Roy Moore in Alabama.
Ford had been bluffing when she offered to testify before the Judiciary Committee in an open hearing. It’s likely that Ford and Feinstein believed that the GOP would simply roll over and accept defeat. In all fairness it was a logical assumption to make. The GOP in the past has shown that they’ve always been ready, willing, and able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Unfortunately for Feinstein and the Democrats the GOP has been slowly but surely morphing into the party of Trump. Judicial confirmations, and SCOTUS nominations in particular, are one of the few areas that GOP leaders such as Mitch McConnell have actually shown some spine. Otherwise we’d all be lamenting ultra-liberal Merrick Garland’s tenure on the SCOTUS.
Ford and Feinstein bluffed, plain and simple, and Grassley and the GOP called it masterfully.
