It’s been a wild week, mainly in IT with the ransomware spreading and all that jazz. We discuss that a little bit but also other gaming news in Thread #33. Let’s get to it.
What Are You Playing This Week?
For me there was Zelda: Breath of the Wild of course but I did try my hand at the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It’s hard to go wrong with a solidly designed game although it does seem like the cheap attacks (lightning bolts, squid ink and blue shells) stack more than ever if you find yourself in first. That said, my daughter says it is easier for her to play, and thus more enjoyable so I can’t complain about that.
I actually managed to play something else this week too – my daughter and I sat down to play some Dark Chambers on the Atari XEGS. Sure, the game is a poor man’s Gauntlet (well, in a way. Dark Chambers came first as Dandy, which inspired Gauntlet) that I would redesign in various ways but it’s still decent enough for 2-player fun. We would have played the superior Atari 7800 version if my power button on that console worked…I really should get that fixed.

I’ve been hearing good things about Has Been Heroes (PC, PS4, Switch, XB1) so let’s share this trailer:

It’s Merely $20 million+ To Get Your eSports Team Into The Overwatch League – I get that eSports is having some big money thrown after it. It’s weird (for now)but you are starting to see some players rake in some nice cash. That said, 20 million for registering eSports teams seems downright silly to me. Blizzard has always demonstrated a level of out-of-touch greed and silly requirements for things like LAN centers to use their games. But what they are showing here for Overwatch is the kind of brazen greed that can only be matched by communists like Chavez, Castro and Marx. Link warning: Story is at ESPN.
Are You Ready Fer Sum Football? Madden 18 Coming August 25th (PS4/XB1) – Using the Frostbite Engine, the latest version of Madden will be hitting consoles at the end of August. Tom Brady will grace the cover and he plays a prominent role in the trailer below, to which there is plenty of speculation about the “Madden Curse”. Brady himself has already laughed it off. As for the game, since this is EA and all, it’s probably best to wait and see whether or not everything they’ll show pre-release ends up being in the actual release. PS., it’s somewhat amusing to see the arguing going on in the comments where soccer fans are trying really hard to get people to care about FIFA.
Available August 25th. Five-time Super Bowl champion, New England Patriots quarterback, and the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady is on the cover of Madden NFL 18! Madden NFL 18 takes a significant visual leap with the power of the Frostbite engine.
Minecraft: Switch Edition Released – I don’t care but I know that an awful lot of gamers do, particularly kids (although my own kinds have finally been starting to pay less attention to it in lieu of actual games, zing!). Due to an issue with docking/undocking, the game runs at 720p with 1080p support when docked coming later. Retailers indicate that the Story Mode version of the game will be launching on July 18th.
Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition is out now on Nintendo eShop! Also includes the Super Mario Mash Up pack with tons of Mario inspired surprise to discover. What will you build? Platinum Games’ Vanquish Is Going PC Master Race On May 25th – I remember hearing a lot of praise for Vanquish when it was released on the Xbox 360 BITD but it was a game that I missed. Now I can get a chance on the superior PC platform.
Vanquish available for pre-order on Steam! 25% off for all Bayonetta owners on Steam! Deluxe Digital Edition content free for all pre-orders! Offer available during pre-order only until May 25th, so hurry! PlatinumGames’ revolutionary sci-fi action shooter slide-boosts onto PC. The Upcoming Battletech In Multiplayer (PC) – It’s not quite Armored Corethat our resident Citizen is looking for but if you are hankering for some mech war action, this might be up your alley. Also, if you have an hour of free time on your hands as this is a bit long. The Beta shown is for Kickstarter backers with a public beta coming soon. The game will be released “some time this year“.
You can still get into the Beta! http://battletechgame.com/Game Director Mike McCain and Studio Manager, Mitch Gitelman, recorded a friendly multiplayer match to give you a peek at what to expect in the Beta. You can find a Beta Gameplay Video List of Annotations here: http://community.battletechgame.com/forums/threads/6547 Full disclosure here – Mike is one of the better players in the studio and Mitch…
Atari’s Revenge On Nintendo – It’s not historically accurate but comedy doesn’t have to be. For “Nerd Rage Accuracy” (since I’m all about Atari history today), Nintendo actually did approach Atari in 1984 to distribute their NES game console in the US but Atari already had their 7800 console pretty much ready to go and they weren’t convinced that it was going to be a good idea after their 5200 game console had flopped (in good part due to a lack of backwards compatibility with the wildly popular 2600). The sale of Atari from Warner to computer guru Jack Tramiel effectively ended that and Nintendo went ahead to do it themselves, which ended up being one of the best gambles in video game history.
But ignoring all that and looking for a laugh, here’s how they came up with Super Mario Bros. They certainly don’t make games like that anymore, do they?

Game Music Of The Week: (Rainbow Road; Mario Kart) – Self-explanatory
You can help support me by downloading the song for a mere £1 from my BandCamp page here: https://andygillion.bandcamp.com/track/rainbow-road-metal-remix It’s been a while since my last video game tribute and I’ve been meaning to do this for years. Everyone’s favourite level to fall off the edge off on Mario Kart.
Homebrew of the Week: Astro Force (Sega Master System) – If you want some vertical scrolling shooting action on your dusty ol’ SMS, then Astro Force might have what you are looking for.
The Sega Master System homebrew scene is certainly giving me goosebumps this month, as another decent looking shooter known as ‘Astro Force’ has appeared via the SMS Power – SMS Coding Competition 2017 forums. Once again a high grade development, this one is an inspiration of other games such as RSG, Thunder force, Gaiares, Aleste, R-type and MSX nemesis and features plenty of action to keep you busy!
Who Decides What Is “Hate”? Austrian Court Demands Facebook Delete Double Plus Ungood Postings – It’s not like Facebook needs incentive to censor their users
A Worm Infection Of Historic Proportions – I won’t say ‘century’ since there is plenty of time left for something worse to happen over the next 80-ish years. I’m sure you’ve read all about how the “NSA Cyber Weapon” did it’s thing and a ‘geek’ saved the world with an $11 purchase. Keep in mind, there is still plenty of risk out there for systems that continue without the security patch needed. Microsoft has shifted policy (for now) in issuing patches for older versions of Windows since the current policies hasn’t worked in getting people to upgrade. You can download the patches, which go all the way back to XP, here if need be. Fun times with Microsoft Windows, eh?
If you have a device that has been infected, there are decryptor programs that you can try to unlock your encrypted files. Check out some free ones here.
Energy Square Wireless Charging – I’ve shared a couple of wireless phone charging videos before but this is a tad different, using a conductive surface and accessory you plug into the phone to get the job done.
Energysquare is a new generation of wireless chargers – charge all your devices on an ultra-thin pad with no induction! FaceDisplay Makes VR Even Goofier – The reason why VR isn’t taking off like certain predictions stated is that it isn’t AR (Augmented Reality). ‘Solutions’ like this one just highlight how awkward it can all become as opposed to making it more intuitive and social.
FaceDisplay: Enabling Multi-User Interaction for Mobile Virtual Reality Jan Gugenheimer, Evgeny Stemasov, Harpreet Sareen, Enrico Rukzio CHI’17: ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems Interactivity Demonstrations Abstract: We present FaceDisplay, a multi-display mobile virtual reality (VR) head mounted display (HMD), designed to enable non-HMD users to perceive and interact with the virtual world of the HMD user.
Inventing With Primitive Means – Forge Blower – I stumbled (browsing via Gab) across this YT channel called Primitive Technology. It’s kind of like a survival show with a focus on primitive technologies to get by. Here he invents a forge blower:
I invented the Bow Blower, a combination of the bow drill and forge blower to make a device that can force air into a fire while being easy to construct from commonly occurring natural materials using only primitive technology. I began by fanning a fire with a piece of bark to increase its temperature.
Forever Alone Ping Pong – More low-tech fun. You could think of this as a more complex fidget spinner.
OUR KICKSTARTER IS LIVE : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1050329560/the-city-clock-paris-design?ref=email http://www.lafabriquediy.com. In this video : Claire et Lucas. This is a 1 player ping-pong table (or pOng pOng table, or forever alone ping pong, or personal pong….) really simple to make with ultra-basic tools. It is more a joke than a real game but still fun to play !
Space Pr0n Of The Week – The Magnetic Milky Way: Space isn’t exactly ’empty’ – there are plenty of particles and radiation fields out and about. We know that most celestial bodies emit a magnetic field of some kind and strength (depending upon their internal make-up & situation) but how about an entire galaxy? That’s what this image from the ESA’s Planck satellite shows. Speaking of such magnetic fields, this paper published at the University of Sydney discusses the first time observation of a magnetic bridge between our galaxy and our neighbors, the relatively small galaxies of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Cool stuff.
