Welcome to the latest version of the weekly gaming & technology thread here at the Sparta Report. Here we place politics on the back burner (for the most part) and geek out over the nerdy things in life.
What Are You Playing This Week?
The nice thing about the Nintendo Switch is that I can play console quality games on something like a tablet away from the big screen. Of course I do prefer my games on larger screens but playing Breath of the Wild in bed has been interesting. The latest Legend of Zelda is all I’ve been able to dedicate time for thanks to this – how about you?
NOTE: We’ll start mentioning the Nintendo Switch as the ‘NSW’
Destiny 2 “Rally The Troops” Trailer (PC/PS4/XB1) – Done in plenty of time before April 1st, Bungie officially unveiled the sequel to their not-Halo FPS game. This will launch on Sep. 8th. As the end of the trailer says, Not actual game footage

Sega Unveils Total War: Warhammer 2 (PC): This is part two of three for Sega’s Total War series. It seems to be doing pretty well on Steam although I have not played any of the WH games to comment further:
Defend your world. Destroy theirs. Sequel to the award-winning Total War: WARHAMMER, Total War: WARHAMMER II introduces a breathtaking campaign of exploration, expansion and conquest across The New World. As one of four unique Races, players will seek to save or disrupt the Great Vortex and decide the fate of the world.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Trailer (NSW) – Now that it’s April 3rd, it has been a whole month since Nintendo launched their latest game console. That also means that a new update to Mario Kart is just a few weeks away. To build on the hype, Nintendo released this trailer:
It’s time to get out your racing gear because Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is coming to Nintendo Switch on April 28th! The Last of Us Part 2 Will Be Coming To The Xbox One (and PS4) – I never understood what all of the fuss was about with The Last Of Us as site after site was obviously being bought off to proclaim it the Best Game Ever Made. Not every actual gamer agreed with that assessment but regardless, the game sold well so a sequel was certainly in the works. Now it turns out that it will not stick solely with Sony’s flagship game console as it will be headed to the Xbox One as well.

Skycurser, an Independently Made JAMMA Arcade Game Is Now Officially Available – Do you have an old JAMMA arcade cabinet and want to add something new to it that looks like it is from the 90s? Skycurser might be for you, having been created by an indie dev group out of Indianapolis. I have had the game for over a year myself, having been one of the first beta testers for it. It has come quite far since that initial build and is available in both upgrade kit and dedicated cabinet forms at a price well-below the average prices of new games these days (which tends to be around $8000).

Spider-Man PS4 Title Launching Q4 2017 (PS4) – This generation of gaming has had an odd ‘slow burn’ feel about it with exclusive content taking its time to arrive. Sometimes the results are worth the wait and others, not so much. If you are into Spider-man and have a PS4 then later this year should prove to be exciting unless the game sucks. As a reminder, Insomniac Games has made sure to “speak out” against President Trump and his immigration stances, which I am sure was worth the wasted time as they did their little part to fight against American security so they could win virtue signaling points.
Marvel and Insomniac Games team up to create a brand-new, authentic Spider-Man story exclusively for PlayStation 4. Game Music of the Week: Something Mystical (Otomedius Excellent) – I watched a sneak preview of a documentary called Touching Sound this past weekend and there they interviewed Japanese game music creator Shinji Hosoe. That led me to look him up and he has quite the resumé of work. Here’s one of his songs from the shoot ’em up Otomedius.

Homebrew of the Week: Paprium (Sega Genesis) – One of my “guilty pleasure” genres is that of the beat ’em up or the brawler. The glory days of the brawler lasted between 1987 and 1993, with the advent of 1v1 fighting games causing interest in co-op fighting games to drop hard. If you are into the genre and still have a Sega Genesis then this new effort by WaterMelon Corp. should be of interest. It is aiming for a September launch and they have already put together this late 80s/early 90s style ad to promote it:
Pre-order now on http://paprium.com PAPRIUM is a new 16-Bit, post-apocalyptic, outrageous brawler game. PAPRIUM is the biggest Mega Drive / SEGA Genesis game ever made and features multiple game modes, 24 Levels and up to 5 Selectable Characters! This is a brand new AAA Mega Drive / SEGA Genesis game, developed from the ground up, to be released in 2017!

April Fools From Vid.me: The Youtube alternative site Vid.me is at it again, using their increasingly popular platform to poke fun at the Youtube behemoth. Here is a direct link to the video in case your browser has an issue with the embed below.

Repairing A Giant Tire – Another slow news day sorta thing but fascinating either way:
This video explains how to repair giant earthmover vehicle tires with solutions created by Rema Tip Top. Rema tip top is a company with German origin, founded in 1923. It is specialized especially in the manufacture of equipment for tires repair.
The New Space Race: When I was down in Florida a month ago, we took the opportunity to visit Kennedy Space Center. While there, they were talking quite a bit about their new rocket design and the goal to reach Mars. They have an entire exhibit dedicated to all of that, showing the new tech required to get people out that far to another planet. Here’s a much shorter video that discusses the new Space Race between NASA, SpaceX and Blue Origins – that said, China is working at it all too but I doubt anyone will care until they actually achieve something (bonus: if they can do so without stealing all of our tech, #lolyeahright):
Moon missions are becoming a bit like buses, it seems as though you wait the best part of 50 years for a return trip to the moon, then within a matter of weeks, two, turn up at once.
Space Pr0n Of The Week: Pluto’s Blu-Rays – Ok, not the video/storage discs but rays of dim light that are cast through Pluto’s tenuous but blue atmosphere:
‘Blue Rays’ (Unwrapped and enhanced version)
