Numerous news outlets are reporting that the Secret Service has intercepted a package containing the deadly poison ricin. The package had been sent to the White House and was addressed to President Trump.
The Secret Service has stated that two separate tests confirmed the package contained ricin.
Ricin is a highly toxic poison extracted from castor beans that has been a favorite tool of terrorists in the past. Numerous ricin-laced letters were sent to various locations by unknown terrorists in 2003, including the White House and then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s office. Ricin was also detected in several letters sent to the Pentagon in 2018. These letters had been addressed to various officials including then-Secretary of Defense James Mattis, President Trump, and Senator Ted Cruz.
Powdered ricin is among one of the most deadly poisons known to man. Ingestion or inhalation of the powder causes nausea, vomiting, and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines. Kidney, spleen, and liver failure also occur, followed by a complete collapse of the circulatory system. Death usually occurs 36-72 hours after ingestion.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for any further updates.
