THE CHURCH HAS DROPPED THE BALL IN EDUCATING THE YOUNG
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
“And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, ‘What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?’ Then thou shalt say unto thy son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes: And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.’”
OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, WE HAVE SEEN BLACK LIVES MATTER (BLM), along with AntiFa, literally terrorize major cities in the United States of America in the aftermath of the George Floyd Incident. These riots, protests, violence, and looting – along with the murder of at least five police officers, including retired police Captain David Dorn – have quite literally torn the nation apart, with many cities literally seeing destruction of every kind of building. These BLM and AntiFa protests have also led to the tearing down of statues of many a famous American and/or international figures which have influenced American History. Some of these have even been statues in foreign lands, such as statues of George Washington and Winston Churchill in Great Britain. What has caused this all to take place? Why have we seen the rise and the popularity of such groups, especially among minorities and young people?
WE USED TO BE A NATION THAT HONORED GOD — The United States of America is a nation founded upon Biblically Christian ideas and ideals. The precepts in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America are easily seen to be founded upon and in and originating from the Bible. No other faith, no other belief places such importance upon the equality of man before the eyes of GOD, as does Biblical Christianity, and both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution speak to this equality and the importance of GOD. It has been mentioned often by Christians that 53 of the 55 signers of the Declaration were members of local churches, including the oft-maligned, later-3rd President of the USA, the late Honorable Thomas Jefferson (and a simple tour through Monticello will show anyone who has the eyes to see, ears to hear, and heart and mind to understand that Thomas Jefferson was a thoroughly and resoundingly Christian man). For nearly two centuries of this nation’s existence, we honored and respected GOD. Because of this, the USA was and has been blessed, and has become the richest and most powerful national entity in the history of the world, with the lone exception being the Kingdom of Israel at the height of King Solomon’s reign (see 1st Kings, chapters i—xi; 2nd Chronicles, chapters i—ix). For at least a century and a half, the Bible was often the only textbook in many a schoolhouse and educational institution. For many decades, the USA was among the top five sender nations with regards to sending out missionaries internationally; and currently is the top sending nation of said Christian Missionaries. We were, as a nation, for more than two centuries, a people that respected GOD.
FUMBLED ON FOURTH AND GOAL INSIDE THE ONE — As we have seen, briefly above, the USA has been a nation that at the very least respected GOD. For much of the history of the USA, the Bible and Prayer were not only important parts of primary and secondary education, they were often the sole means of educating the young and youth of our nation. In many (again, if not most) churches in the USA, three books were found in the church: the Bible, a Hymnal, and the Book of Common Prayer. These three often made up the curriculum for most in the 18th through early 20th Centuries in the United States of America. The result of this education in the Bible and in prayer, along with the teaching of respect (at the very least) towards GOD resulted in a citizenry and population that had a natural bent towards morality and virtue in the general population…
“In a recent essay, Ravi Zacharias devoted a few paragraphs to the importance of moral reasoning and an ethical foundation. He reminded us of the insight that can be found in the book, The Roads to Modernity. Gertrude Himmelfarb makes a very powerful statement in the book. She argues that the difference between the European Enlightenment and the English and American Enlightenment was really one word.
“For the French philosophers, reasoning was supreme. For the English and American philosophers, moral reasoning was supreme. Edmund Burke makes a similar observation in his commentary. Ethics, morality, and moral reasoning were important not only in that period of time but also were important in the framing of our government.” [source]
Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville, the famed French Historian, once said this about Americans…
“The Americans combine the notions of religion and liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive of one without the other.” [source]
“Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
“Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.” [source]
And yet, despite these glaring truths, America did something at the beginning of the 1960s which has affected American life adversely ever since: we removed Prayer and Bible reading from the toolbox of educators in public school.
THREE SUPREME COURT DECISIONS THAT HAVE RUINED THE USA — Starting in the early 1960s, the Supreme Court of the United States of America rendered three decisions that altered the landscape of the USA and sewed the seeds of what we have today. In the first, Engel v. Vitale, administration-led prayer was forbidden in public school; declared unconstitutional in a 6–1 decision. Just a year later (in 1963 [the Engel v. Vitale decision being rendered in 1962], in the Abington School District v. Schempp and Murray v. Curlett joint case, the Supreme Court decided 8–1 that Administration-led Bible Reading was further declared unconstitutional in public school. In both cases, the decisions were rendered in large measure because these actions allegedly violated The Establishment Clause. It is telling that both of these decisions were rendered after nearly two hundred years of US Education Institutes at every level utilizing both prayer to GOD and the reading and recitation of passages from the Bible. Correctly defining and interpreting the Establishment Clause and the First Amendment to the Constitution of the USA, dissenting Justice Potter Stewart wrote the following…
“As a matter of history, the First Amendment was adopted solely as a limitation upon the newly created National Government. The events leading to its adoption strongly suggest that the Establishment Clause was primarily an attempt to insure that Congress not only would be powerless to establish a national church, but would also be unable to interfere with existing state establishments.” [source]
The third decisive and destructive Supreme Court Decision came in 1973, in the Roev. Wade case. In a 7–2 decision, the Supreme Court essentially made the murder of unborn babies legal across all fifty US States. Despite his concurrence with the majority decision, Justice Potter again wrote succinctly…
“Abortion is inherently different from other medical procedures because no other procedure involves the purposeful termination of a potential life.” [source]
The late Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America, the Honorable William Rehnquist, once wrote the following…
“It is always possible for the court to overreach its proper bounds and perhaps declare a lot of laws unconstitutional and frustrate the will of the majority in a way that it ought not be frustrated.” [source]
“A father’s interest in having a child — perhaps his only child — may be unmatched by any other interest in his life. It is truly surprising that the state must assign a greater value to a mother’s decision to cut off a potential human life by abortion than to a father’s decision to let it mature into a live child.”
“Pregnancy is of course confined to women, but it is in other ways significantly different from the typical covered disease or disability”
“The ‘wall of separation between church and state’ is a metaphor based on bad history, a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging. It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned.” [source]
Friends, this is the very essence of the tragedy of the three cases presented here. These cases — and the Obergefell v. Hodges case and decision, legalizing Homosexual “Marriage” across all fifty US States is a fourth destructive decision by the Supreme Court of the USA — sewed the seeds of what we are seeing today. In the past, children were taught to respect their elders and their betters; taught to treat police officers, government officials, firefighters, doctors and nurses, military personnel, and all other people in authority, with the utmost respect. What we are seeing — yea, what we have seen in the past — with regards to even the disrespect shown to government officials and elected leaders by journalists in press conference pools, let alone what we are seeing with AntiFa and BLM, are products of these Supreme Court decisions. The Apostle Paul Bethtarsus may as well have been writing about today…
“Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” [source]
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.” [source]
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was…Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.” [source]
A millennia before Dr. Bethtarsus, King Solomon wrote just as presciently…
“There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.” [source]
WHERE WAS THE CHURCH THEN? WHERE IS THE CHURCH NOW? What is glaring is the action of the Church of Jesus Christ in the USA concerning the four destructive decisions rendered by the Supreme Court of the USA in 1962, 1963, 1973, and 2015: NOTHING was done. In all four of these landmark, culturally altering decisions and cases, the Church was no where to be found. Neither during the cases nor the subsequent decisions, no church stood forth to offer up an official dissent or disagreement with these decisions. While the late Ms. Norma McCorvey — “Jane Roe” in the Roe v. Wade case and decision — became a believer in and follower of Jesus Christ and fought to have the Roe v. Wade decision vacated, and the March For Life has taken place every year since 1973, not one church in any of the four cases presented; not one denomination nationwide in each case offered one word of dissent, not one minute of action in demonstration and protest against the Supreme Court’s edicts. The same can be said for the recent BLM Riots, AntiFa lootings and insurrection, and the lawlessness that has crept over Democratic Party dominated cities and Liberally led states. Not only have businesses been looted and destroyed, but people have been killed, murdered by BLM Rioters and AntiFa Terrorists; all the while, the Church of Jesus Christ in the USA has remained silent: no congregational leader, no church pastor, no denomination administrator, no Clergyman, Deacon, nor Elder in any church has offered up one word of dissent, one second of counter-protest, nor one mention of disagreement against any of the mayhem that has taken place. Yes, there have been church pastors and denominational leaders who have opened up their churches, despite governor executive orders concerning COVID-19 and lockdowns, and have been arrested, even; not one has stood against nor denounced this senselessness and this literal insurrection that we have seen in the last two months of riots. Even statues commemorating the lives and actions of Christian men and women have been toppled, and nobody has said anything against such criminal activity. Does the written Word of GOD mean anything to us…?
“So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, ‘O wicked man, thou shalt surely die;’ if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.” [source]
“And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ‘Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, “Thou shalt surely die;” and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity;but thou hast delivered thy soul. Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.’” [source]
THE BOTTOM LINE: BLM AND ANTIFA CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE CHURCH’S INACTION. Friends, this is the simple truth. Because the Church of Jesus Christ in the USA did nothing, said nothing, and allowed the Bible, Prayer — yea, GOD Himself — to be eliminated from public school, without so much as a “by your leave”, BLM and AntiFa have grown and risen and taken the place given by the vacuum allowed by the Church, by the absence of GODLY instruction in public school. Here is what the Bible has to state concerning this…
“If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small. If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; If thou sayest, ‘Behold, we knew it not;’ doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?” [source]
“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” [source]
“The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.” [source]
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!’” [source]
“Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.” [source]
CONCLUSION: IF WE DON’T TAKE A STAND NOW, WE WON’T BE ABLE TO LATER. It’s past time for the Church of Jesus Christ in the USA to wake up and to take a stand (it’s almost too late). If we don’t, we,the Church in America, will lose every right, will lose every protection from the laws of the land. Again, we reach back into the Scriptures to see what will happen to us if we fail to stand…
“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” [source]
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, your Church in the USA needs REVIVAL! Will you please send it? Will you please send us a Great Awakening, the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long, long time? Come, will you please, Holy Spirit? We need Thee! We pray all of these things in the Wondrous and Precious Name of Jesus Christ our LORD, Amen!
THE LAST WORD:
“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?”
