Reports are coming in from several locations that the Big 10 has voted to cancel the 2020 football season. In a 10-2 vote, with both Michigan and Michigan St voting to cancel, the season is over. (Westiegirl reports that only Iowa and Nebraska were in favor of playing.)
Weekend reports indicated that the PAC 12 was also prepared to cancel the season. The plan is for a “unified announcement” coming from the Power 5 conferences on Tuesday. Once Power 5 conferences cancel, then the rest of the conferences will cancel.
There is some talk about playing in the spring, but that is just talk. It would mean that NCAA football would play both a spring and fall season. Ain’t gonna happen.
All other fall sports are expected to suffer the same fate.
PAC 12 players may have also contributed to the cancellation themselves. Star players in the conference from different teams had been organizing and demanding new “rights” before they would play. Some of their demands included
- Profit sharing with 50% of profits to go to players.
- A health plan that would cover players for 6 years AFTER they were no longer playing.
Players from other conferences had also joined the PAC 12 players and were prepared to present their demands to the various conference commissioner.
The money that is earned from attendance, broadcast rights, concession sales and bowl games serves to do more than just fund the football program. The money funds other programs as well.
This year’s crop of juniors and seniors are now in a heap of hurt. Plans for jumping or being drafted into the NFL are certainly on hold. The lay off will certainly affect their performance levels.
Congratulations go out to NCAA football like NFL football. You have killed the goose that laid the golden egg.
