The 2020 Major League Baseball All Star Game was supposed to be played in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Thanks to The Chinese Virus you’ll hafta make do with a reminisce of an All Star Game long past – 1965 to be exact:
Second pitch of the game Milt Pappas grooves a fastball to Willie Mays and BOOM, there goes a round-tripper to center field.
There were a lotta dingers smacked on that beautifully sunny summer afternoon: a couple batters after The Say Hey Kid, Joe Torre knocked one outta the park. So did Willie Stargell and Dick McAullife.
It was like Home Run Derby on steroids, made more amazing considering that some of the pitchers were such strike out aces as Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale and Sudden Sam McDowell.
Nirvana was achieved in the bottom of the fifth. The Killer, every kid’s favorite Twin, launched a towering moon shot into the left field bleaches tying the game at 5 to 5.
To say the crowd went wild was an understatement. (In those days the phrase “bat shit crazy” had yet to be coined.)
