Space X Launch – Really worth all the hype?

We have done this before

As I turned on the news this morning, the hype on the cable channels is all about the Space X launch today. The entire process is being broadcast as if this is something new.

Space X is taking us backwards and not forward in space exploration. The only thing new about it is that Space X is a private company, firing Americans back into space on a giant candle.

Space X’s launch vehicle is nothing new. And the process is nothing new. Let us look at it.

  • Space X capsules take off on a giant rocket. Basically a candle that flies through the air. Um, we have done this before with Gemini, Apollo and even the Shuttle.
  • The astronauts ride in a capsule. A capsule for heaven’s sake. Not even a Shuttle type vehicle.  We were doing this with Gemini and Apollo.
  • When the astronauts return to earth, they ride a parachute back into the water.  The water! Again, this was Gemini and Apollo processes. At least the Shuttle landed like a plane.

Elon Musk heads Space X. He also produces the Tesla electric vehicle of all things. So what could go wrong there.

This is no big deal. It is a return to the past.  Why bother with all the hype?

At least it gets Covid – 19 off the media channels for a day. So I must be thankful for that.
