There’s But One Reason Why America Has Taken Leave of Her Senses in the COVID-19 Scare.
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
“There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.”
“Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.”
Over the last week and a half, or so, since the Coronavirus (also commonly known as COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) — and in the weeks leading up to this announcement — we have seen just about every major sporting, political, and social event on planet earth cancel or postpone. We have also seen literal insanity of shoppers at local stores, buying up every imaginable food staple, hygiene necessity, and personal survival item bought to exhaustion at most stores and groceries around the United States of America. We have also seen people get into physical fights over some goods at department stores and grocery stores. Recent moves by state and city governments have seen restaurants and other local businesses shut down, many on pain of being boarded up, and Constitutional Rights suspended in the face of the States of Emergency that have been enacted. Many may wonder, “Why is there such a panic over the COVID-19 Virus, seeing its symptoms and outcomes are small?” Why, really, is such happening in the United States of America? How can and how could life be brought to such a standstill in light of other diseases being far, far worse? The answer, really, is pretty simple…
GOD IS NO LONGER WELCOME IN THE CLASSROOM. First and foremost, the decisions in the 1960s concerning GOD and Bible Reading and Prayer in Public School must be addressed. This may be a drum that has been beaten much — and maybe over-beaten, in many cases — but it is still a fact of history for the United States that cannot be glossed over. It could be easily said that the vast majority of the problem is that have cropped up since the decisions were made to remove administration-led Prayer and Bible Reading from Public School could have never materialized had both been left in. The fact of the matter is that in Public Schools and State Universities, GOD is no longer promoted, no longer praised, no longer worshiped, nor any of these encouraged by school administrators. Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina said, at the time…
“I should like to ask whether we would be far wrong in saying that in this decision the Supreme Court has held that God is unconstitutional and for that reason the public school must be segregated against Him?”
Friends, this is where all the problems the US of A now faces began…yes, ALL of them. There is no such thing as a Spiritual Vacuum. When GOD leaves, there isn’t just nothing that takes his place. It is the Devil who comes in and takes up residence. We see this in the life of King Saul…
“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.”
We see similarly in the following…
“Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.”
“Jesus answered, ‘He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it.’And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, ‘That thou doest, do quickly.’ Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, ‘Buy those things that we have need of against the feast;’ or, that he should give something to the poor. He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.”
We can easily see that when the Spirit of the LORD departs, when GOD is ushered out, the Devil comes in. Even Christ Jesus mentions this…
“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, ‘I will return into my house from whence I came out;’ and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.”
“He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, ‘I will return unto my house whence I came out.’ And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”
Friends, what we are seeing with regards to the situation in public school, state universities…yea, even this panic with which we are engulfed, concerning the COVID-19 Virus is simply testament to the written Word of the LORD, as we see above. Removing GOD from the public school classroom has only opened us up as a nation to something far, far worse.
FLEEING FROM NOTHING — The Bible also predicts another feature of the COVID-19 virus, which we are seeing today: fleeing from nothing…
“The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
This isn’t to sat that the COVID-19 virus is “nothing” but the hype, the panic, the fear created by the American Mainstream Media is certainly nothing. Here are a few more passages that make the point…
“And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.”
“But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.”
“The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.”
“Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.”
Friends, when we reject GOD; when we accept the world and the things of the world over and above the LORD of Heaven, the result is fear…
“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”
After the very first sin, in the Garden of Eden, we see this, again, played out before our very eyes…
“And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, ‘Where art thou?’ And he said, ‘I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ And he said, ‘Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?’ And the man said, ‘The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.’”
Joshua, chapter vii, tells of yet another example of how the people of GOD were afraid of nothing (and why)…
“But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai. And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, ‘Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.’ So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai. And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. And Joshua said, ‘Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan! O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies! For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?’ And the LORD said unto Joshua, ‘Get thee up;wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face? Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you. Up, sanctify the people, and say, “Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, ‘There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel:’” thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.’”
The key to all of this, friends, is keeping with GOD and following his will. When we reject him, we invite sin and fear and defeat and panic into our lives.
EVEN GREATER DANGER! There is even greater danger when we, individually or corporately, choose to reject GOD…
“The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”
Again, we can see this playing out before our very eyes. Because we have rejected GOD, we have been overcome by panic, fear, hysteria, and almost quite literal insanity. We have been given over to these things. Here is yet another example of this happening on a national level…
“And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD, With twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians. And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem. Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, ‘Thus saith the LORD, “Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.”’”
“And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done. For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree. And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel. And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem: And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he even took away all: and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.”
Friends, these are but two passages about one instance found in the Bible. We see many times where GOD’s people turn against GOD to their own national and cultural detriment. Time and time again, from the time of the Judges to the deporting of the Southern Kingdom of Judah to Babylon, the people of the LORD turning away form GOD and GOD giving them to their enemies. Such calamity and horror and terror and punishment came each time. We re seeing the same with regards to the panic, fear, cancellations, lock-downs, and restrictions being set about because of the COVID-19 virus which, though quite harmful to those with other problems, by and large is mild to those who are young and relatively healthy. This fear and panic are also causing national calamity.
THE BOTTOM LINE: WE WERE WARNED THIS WOULD HAPPEN! The Bible — for so long revered, studied, and lived out in the daily lives of Americans— warned us about these problems we are seeing and having. Two chapters form books in the Old Testament give us a glaring, blatant, grisly look at what happens to nations that reject GOD. Here are excerpts from each…
“And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.”
“But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store. Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out. The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. The LORD shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it. The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.”
Are we not already seeing these things? Are we not already experiencing the curses mentioned in these two passages? And these were written nearly four thousand years ago! Friends, we were warned of this day, yet we took no action. Because of that, because of our rejections of GOD and the turning away from his written and inerrant Word, we are living in a time of tremendous fear, and terrific hardship.
CONCLUSION: THERE IS A WAY OUT! There is a way for us to escape the fear, escape the panic, and escape the hysteria…
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.”
That’s it, friends! If we will but return to GOD, he will return to us and heal our land!
“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, ‘God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
Here — right here — is the sure promises of GOD! And these promises work both individually and corporately. Here are two more pieces of good news, this time for the LORD Jesus Christ Himself…
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
PRAYER — Heavenly Father, in these times of fear and panic, will you help us to turn to you, to turn back to you as a nation and a society? The spirit of fear is reigning because we have rejected you: would you help us to turn back to you, O LORD? Would you bring us revival again, and revive our hearts to uplift your Name? We pray all of these things in the Name of Jesus Christ, our Risen Savior, Amen!
THE LAST WORD“Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him;that glory may dwell in our land.”—Psalm lxxxv. 4–9
