The Right’s Fake News is Worse than the Left’s

We on the Right need to be diligent in watching for our own fake news. Yes, it does happen as I’ll relate here in a minute. Our fake news gets amplified by the MSM with little opportunity on our side to correct the record.

We’re a bit more immune here at the Sparta Report because we’re basically an opinion site with no expectation that we’re going to create news and “scoops” for readers. Sometimes Patrick does go for a walk with his dog and Bruno has been known to peek out his window between the blinds but that’s pretty well the extent of our investigative journalism.

What we do here is offer opinions about what we’re seeing in the world and, of course, a lot of that comes from various news sources. I think we’ve done a pretty good job on not jumping on the rumor of the day and when we do our readers are pretty good at keeping us honest with pithy comments such as “you’re an idiot!”

In my article In Support of the Refugee Resettlement Program and Executive Order 13888 , a commenter brought up a situation involving some refugees here in Twin Falls that occurred in 2016.

The definitive article on the event was written in 2017 titled How Fake News Turned a Small Town Upside Down.

Here’s what we know as fact (quoting from the article):

Three children had been discovered partly clothed inside a shared laundry room at the apartment complex where they lived. There were two boys, a 7-year-old and a 10-year-old, and a 5-year-old girl. The 7-year-old boy was accused of attempting some kind of sex act with the 5-year-old, and the 10-year-old had used a cellphone borrowed from his older brother to record it. The girl was American and, like most people in Twin Falls, white. The boys were refugees.

We also know the youngest boy is from Iraq and the two older boys, who are brothers, are from Eritrea in Africa. The families of the boys were evicted from the apartment building and the family of the girl also moved although I can’t find the reason in the public record. The girl has a disability — the nature of which is unknown.

Virtually everything else you might think you know about this case is fake news. Why? Because the case was put under seal which is exactly what should happen when it involves minors. The biggest fake news is that was a “cover up” because it’s under seal. And if it involved one of your kids, you’d damn well want it under seal as well!

In June 2017, the case was resolved through a plea agreement and the boys were sentenced. While we know what they plead guilty to, we don’t know the sentence because that’s under seal as well.

The only interesting additional tidbit is that this might be the first known instance of the Russians using Facebook to attempt to foment discord in the United States in 2016. I did a search in the Mueller Report and Twin Falls isn’t specifically mentioned but based on other things we know, I’m going with “very highly likely.”

Alex Jones was sued by Chobani for liable. The suit was settled when Jones issued a retraction and acknowledged that we “mischaracterized Chobani, its employees and the people of Twin Falls, Idaho.”

Just a reminder that as we move into 2020, the rhetoric from both sides will be off the scales. It’s vital that we be skeptical of even our own news particularly when the news is really just an opinion based on an assumption that may or not be true.
