I stumbled across a thoroughly depressing post while surfing The Internets the other day. It was titled “We’re in a Permanent Coup” and was written by Matt Taibbi, who is a well-pedigreed leftist and confirmed opponent of President Trump.
The post contains the expected dislike of The Donald, but if you are able to put on your galoshes and open an umbrella for the the duration of The Read you may find there are some pretty cogent observations embedded in the post regarding the machinations of The Deep State and it’s long standing desire to establish a permanent Banana Republic American-style:
My discomfort in the last few years, first with Russiagate and now with Ukrainegate and impeachment, stems from the belief that the people pushing hardest for Trump’s early removal are more dangerous than Trump. Many Americans don’t see this because they’re not used to waking up in a country where you’re not sure who the president will be by nightfall. They don’t understand that this predicament is worse than having a bad president.
A couple more quick points from Taibbi’s article (hat-tip to Sparta’s NWC. I pinched his observations for this quote):
…Donald “Deep State” Trump is a legitimately elected president whose ouster is being actively sought by the intelligence community.
CIA/FBI-backed impeachment could also be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If Donald Trump thinks he’s going to be jailed upon leaving office, he’ll sooner or later figure out that his only real move is to start acting like the “dictator” MSNBC and CNN keep insisting he is. Why give up the White House and wait to be arrested, when he still has theoretical authority to send Special Forces troops rappelling through the windows of every last Russiagate/Ukrainegate leaker? That would be the endgame in a third world country, and it’s where we’re headed, unless someone calls off this craziness. Welcome to the Permanent Power Struggle.
The the whole post is well worth reading. It will raise hackles, blood-pressure and the hairs on the back of your neck.
One big thing in Taibbi’s favor is his acceptance of Trump as “legitimate” which for most of The Left continues to be a point of denial.
The comments section for the post is filled with the usual Orange Man Bad screeds we’ve come to expect but buried down within I found this:
It’s so hard for me to understand why my liberal, and especially, my progressive friends don’t get this. Even If Ukrainegate does rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors”— and I’m willing to withhold judgement on that for now— any impeachment hearings are tainted by the ravenous searching for crimes that began immediately post-election. I remember Watergate. The hearings were deliberate and no one, neither Democrat nor Republican — was anxious to impeach. That, as you point out, was not our preferred way to change administrations. I also believe that we are at a critical point. If we do this now, there’s no turning back, and a president who makes it through four years will be a rarity.
The early-on failure by Trump to quickly and thoroughly “drain the swamp” has now borne it’s inevitable consequence.
The fact that even a committed leftist like Taibbi has realized the danger in which we presently find ourselves makes the complicit idiocy of the Romney/GOPe/NeverTrump contingent even more unforgivable.
Hey, the Left is going to do what the Left has always done; they at least have been open and consistent about their endgame.
It’s the alleged Republican/Conservative Elite Intelligentsia that I have come to really loathe.
In theory they should have known better. Instead they have sided with The Enemy every step of the way in the past three years and in a most arrogant and condescending manner.
I’ve lived my whole life in the crocodile’s blue belly; I’ve seen what a one-party city-state looks like up close and personal. It is relentless and pitiless and rapacious of your heart, mind and liberty right down to dictating the kind of trash bag you are allowed to use for your piles of fallen autumn leaves.
It isn’t Soviet Russia; its more akin to Romania or Hungary or some other soul-stealing Eastern Bloc country in The Bad Old Days (thankfully without an Official Thought Police. Yet.)
Now we are teetering on the brink and if I had to lay money on which outcome to pick I’d go with the bad one.
The suburban “Soccer Moms” voting cohort who just can’t get by Mr. Mean Tweets style will be shocked when they find out they are the next dish being served up on the crocodile’s menu.
ps: another hat tip, this time to Sparta cementer Westiegirl who found a tweet containing what appears to be a photo of Ilhan Omar at The Riot following the Trump Rally in Minneapolis.
