AfroFuture FEST is a youth music festival taking place next month in Detroit. The organizers of AfroFuture FEST have billed it as:
MMERSIVE, INTIMATE, AND INTENTIONAL SPACE KEEPING FOR AFRO-BLACK FUTURIST. A 360 TRANSFORMATIVE DREAMSCAPE CENTERING DETROIT’S BLACK MAGIC PERFORMERS AND ARTISANS WITH COMMUNITY. ESSENCE FEST MEETS AFRO PUNK; INTERSECTING NARRATIVES CO CREATING THE FUTURE NECESSARY FOR BLACK THRIVING. ENERGY SOURCING FROM THE WAKANDA THAT IS DETROIT. OUR DESTINATION IS REIMAGINATION. ALIGNED MAKERS, AND SHAKERS IN COLLECTIVE LIBERATION. NOW SEVEN GENERATIONS PAST THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE BLACK SPIRITS ARE IN SYNERGETIC HEALING. THE DONATION BASED LANDSCAPE OF FEEDOM FREEDOM IS A HOME TO BLACK DETROIT; ANCHORING THE ACCESSIBILITY NEEDED FOR ITS COMMUNITY.
I have absolutely no idea what the majority of that progressive word salad means.
Suffice to say, AfroFuture FEST is apparently intended to be a space for black performers and artists to make their voices heard. A laudable goal under normal circumstances to be sure.
Unfortunately, AfroFuture FEST has decided to protest the racism (allegedly) inherent in today’s society by…engaging in that exact same racism. The festival’s organizers recently announced that they would have two ticket pricing structures.
According to the festival’s website, people of color will pay only $10 to enter the festival. White people will need to pay $20 for the privilege of having people lecture them about their “white privilege.”
This discriminatory pricing structure is racism in its purest form.
There’s at least one AfroFuture FEST performer that thinks so as well. Rapper Tiny Jag, real name is Jillian Graham, has dropped out of AfroFuture FEST after learning of their racist pricing structure.
“I was immediately enraged just because I am biracial,” Graham told the Detroit Metro Times. “I have family members that would have, under those circumstances, been subjected to something that I would not ever want them to be in … especially not because of anything that I have going on.”
Tiny Jag, whose grandmother is white, called the move by AfroFuture FEST “non-progressive” and “not solution based.”
“It seems almost like it has spite, and unfortunately with spite comes hate, and that’s just not obviously going to be a good direction for us to go if we’re looking for positive change,” she told the news outlet.
Tiny Jag isn’t the only one upset at AfroFuture FEST. The event management website Eventbrite has threatened to drop AfroFuture FEST.
“Our mission is to bring the world together through live experiences,” Eventbrite said in a statement to The Independent. “We strive to provide a platform that enables people to gather for their chosen purpose, and that reflects diverse viewpoints, so long as they don’t violate our terms.”
The statement continued: “We do not permit events that require attendees to pay different prices based on their protected characteristics such as race or ethnicity.
“In this case, we have notified the creator of the event about this violation and requested that they alter their event accordingly,” the statement concluded. “We have offered them the opportunity to do this on their own accord; should they not wish to comply we will unpublish the event completely from our site.”
Time and again we are lectured about how American culture, particularly white American culture, is steeped in racism. Yet the most overt racism comes from the so-called progressives who crow about “white privilege” and demand “reparations.”
Kudos to Tiny Jag and Eventbrite for taking a stand against racism of all types.
Update: Afrofuture cancels its racist ticket pricing scheme.
Breitbart is reporting that AfroFuture’s organizers have bowed to pressure from Eventbrite and removed their racist ticket prices.
For the safety of our community, family, elders who received threats from white supremacists,& youth who were subjected to seeing racist comments on our IG pg,Afrofuture Fest has changed our ticketing model to $20 General Admission & suggested donation for nonPOC on @eventbrite pic.twitter.com/6wQXEjRKtt

Naturally, Afrofuture blamed racist white supremacists for the change. The Internet wasn’t buying their explanation, though.
Its always easy to blame it on white supremacists lmao.

I don’t know why you are teaching this to our youth…this is racism, not equity, then to blame it on the youth is just crazy…there has to be an adult in charge of these youth, right?….guide your children, teach them tolerance of all people. HUMAN RACE!

does that mean all whitepeople are white supremacists…might as well cancel the concert or make the ticket free…

Not to mention that price discrimination based on race is, you know, illegal. Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be fired.

As a native Detroiter, I am shocked, and hurt, at your original pricing based on race. If you want white people to come out and explore African culture, so they can better understand and relate to the black experience, this was NOT the way to encourage them to do so.
