Pressure on Puerto Rico Governor to Resign Increases

Pressure

I still think Puerto Rico’s corrupt governor Ricardo Rosello will ultimately tough out calls to resign, but the opposition to him seems to be getting louder:

Pressure mounted on Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló to resign after tens of thousands of demonstrators marched against him Wednesday and lawmakers began exploring the possibility of impeaching him.

The embattled governor faces a string of scandals, from the indictments of two former high-ranking officials in his administration to the leak of nearly 900 pages of vulgar, insulting messages between him and his advisers.

The protest on Wednesday, believed to be one of the largest in the island’s history, began peacefully in the afternoon, as waves of demonstrators poured into the streets of Old San Juan. Celebrities such as singers Ricky Martin and Bad Bunny joined the march. Protesters beat drums and chanted slogans like, “There are more of us, and we are not afraid.”

President Trump on Thursday commented for the first time on the protests. “The Governor is under siege,” he wrote in a tweet. “The United States Congress foolishly gave 92 Billion Dollars for hurricane relief, much…of which was squandered away or wasted, never to be seen again.”

Meanwhile, Carlos “Johnny” Méndez, president of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives and a member of the governor’s party, said Wednesday he was appointing a group of legal experts to analyze the leaked chat messages to see whether any crimes were committed. The panel also is tasked with determining whether impeachment proceedings should begin.

While some media outlets have tried to spin these protests as anger that Rosello isn’t doing more to “fight Trump,” I suspect this is really a case where the citizens are fed up with Rosello making excuses and blaming Trump for all of Puerto Rico’s problems while doing nothing to help the beleaguered territory.

I’m rooting for the islanders to finally throw this bum out, wipe the slate clean, and put someone into office who will stop obstructing the fiscal control board and can get on with the business of rebuilding the territory.
