President Trump has officially designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. This is the first time a US president has used the designation for an entire foreign government organization.
The designation puts Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on the same level as terror groups Hamas and Hezbollah.
Vice President Mike Pence cited the Guard’s connection with various terror plots over the years. Pence said the IRGC’s new designation recognizes “basic reality.”
The IRGC has been connected to terror plots in countries around the world. The IRGC was said to have been involved in an assassination attempt on an Israeli diplomat in New Delhi in 2012. Most recently, Iran was linked to a Paris bomb plot targeting members of the National Council of Resistance in Iran.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is also rumored to have various links to Al-Qaeda as well as Afghanistan’s Taliban.
President Trump said the move, “underscores the fact that Iran’s actions are fundamentally different from those of other governments.”
President Trump also had a warning for those who would seek to do business with the IRGC:
“If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism. This action sends a clear message to Tehran that its support for terrorism has serious consequences.”
The designation of the IRGC as a terror organization will serve to further ramp up pressure on Iran’s Islamist regime and isolate the country.
Iran has threatened to retaliate against the US as a result of today’s designation.
