DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen Resigns

Nielsen out, Kevin McAleenan in…

President Trump announced late Sunday afternoon that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position. Nielsen has been DHS secretary for the last 16 months.

Nielsen confirmed her resignation in a statement she made on Twitter soon after President Trump’s announcement.

Under Nielsen’s tenure as DHS secretary the United States has seen an increasing influx of illegal migrants across the southern border with Mexico. Several high profile caravans numbering in the thousands have attempted to cross the border during Nielsen’s time as secretary.

Nielsen had been seen by many on the right as squishy at best when it came to stopping the increasing influx of illegal immigrants crossing America’s borders. Nielsen had been viewed as resistant to some of the harsher measures that the Trump administration had wanted to take to ensure border security.

Several Trump administration officials had reportedly stated that Nielsen’s background in cyber security made her a poor fit for handling the challenges of what is essentially an open border with Mexico.

These same officials said that as America’s top cop on border security Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan better reflected the direction President Trump intended to take in securing the southern border.

Kirstjen Nielsen’s resignation comes after President Trump withdrew the nomination of acting ICE head Ron Vitiello to become the department’s permanent head. President Trump said, “Ron’s a good man, but we’re going in a tougher direction, we want to go in a tougher direction.”

Withdrawing Vitiello’s nomination was reportedly the first step for the Trump administration in taking a tougher stance on the border. Perhaps Kirstjen Nielsen’s resignation was the second step.
