I have recently reached the Sad Conclusion that when President Trump finally leaves office, be it by impeachment, coup, ballot or other means, we have passed The Point of No Return for repairing the nation’s torn fabric of civility.
The recent Covington MAGA hat hatefest (on top of the weeks long slander of SCOTUS Justice Brett Kavanaugh last fall) clearly indicates that The Left has no intention of returning to The Old Normal where those with whom you politically disagreed were considered deluded, goofy, sad and/or Just Plain Wrong.
Instead we now move forward with The New Normal: the disagreed with are not only disagreeable, they are hate-filled, horrible, “ist or ic” (U-Pick-Em), morally deformed, vile and To Be Crushed Into Submission and Disposed Of in the prescribed manner of the moment.
We are in the salad days of a cultural shift whereby political opposition is no longer considered to be a matter of opinion but instead a Mortal Struggle of Moral Certitude.
I used to think there would be a day coming when The Ledge, having been walked up to, would be walked back from.
I don’t see that anymore.
And I do not see any inclination on the part of the Proggy Left (which is now the mainstream of the Democrat party, the media, the entertainment industry, high tech and academia) to even want to Unring That Bell even if it was possible to so do.
You cannot find common ground with those that wish your destruction, that detest your religious faith, that wish to punish you socially and economically, and that hold a fanatical belief in their own superiority and self-righteousness.
When wearing a hat emblazoned with the wrong slogan is a trip-wire for calls of “justifiable” violence from the preening “tolerant” crowd we have moved into the deep freeze of A Cold Civil War.
I wish it wan’t so, but wish-casting has a notoriously poor track-record of problem-solving.
The Overton Window now looks out on a dark new landscape of mistrust, suspicion, and barely-contained rage.
You and I may not like the view, but it would be foolhardy to not get used to The New Normal…
