Gaming’N Tech Thread #93 - Raytracing Makes A Big Combeback

Via:

What Are You Playing This Week?

For myself, I was able to get a little bit of gaming in this week, from Lost Castle on the PC to Redline Rampage and Space Riders pinball at the arcade. I should be taking the Switch with me more often when I go places, especially where I have a carry case now. Overall, not much to write about - how about you?

Diablo III Headed To Nintendo Switch - Last week there was a tease that Blizzard had multiple Diablo projects in the works and this week, a mistake over at Forbes unveiled that the popular series would finally make it’s way to a Nintendo platform. Despite the leak, Nintendo was ready to drop this announcement trailer. This version will have exclusive content and of course will be ready for on the go play:

nVidia Unveils Turing Architecture - nVidia proudly pulled the curtain back on their upcoming Turing architecture, and at the heart of it is real-time raytracing. Lazy journalists everywhere are claiming that this is the “first time” that the technique will be possible, but don’t buy into that as NUON DVD players from 2000 could handle it. Intel also was experimenting with it eight years ago; but yes, what nVidia has here is far more extensive than what previous efforts could do. The RTX series of GPUs are available for pre-order now, although you’ll end up spending a pretty penny if you want the glory of raytracing all over your games. There are almost a couple of dozen games that support the RTX mode, which will certainly grow quickly. If you just want to see the new raytracing segment, here’s the 2 minute footage on that.

Remnant: From The Ashes Gameplay (PC/PS4/XB1) - I stumbled across this one and I suppose it tickles my fancy so in it goes down here. If you like 3rd person survival-horror action, along with procedurally generated levels to hopefully keep things interesting, this might be for you. It also has crafting, because everything has crafting now 😛 Launching sometime in 2019.

As one of the few survivors left, you will venture into portals to fantastic realms to gather the resources and firepower needed to fight back and retake what was lost.

Hardcore Lives Again (PS4/PSV) - Here’s an interesting story: Back in 1994, DICE wasn’t terribly well-known, but they were around and making projects for computers and game consoles alike. They had their own Metroid/Turrican style game in the works called Hardcore, but the publisher Psygnosis canned the game at the last minute. More details can be found here; and yes, it is coming to the PSVita when it lands in 2019 :

Game Music Of The Week: Zelda Medlies On Synth: We haven’t covered music in a while, so here you go.

Homebrew Of The Week: JagZombies (Atari Jaguar) - It may not have the most inventive name in the world, and it lacks music, but if you still collect for the Atari Jaguar, then a new zombies shooter is available for the platform. The system never had a light-gun accessory released for it, so this is all controlled by gamepad. Available on cartridge or CD.

Laser Projectors, Another Hope Of The Movie Industry - I’ve not had much success in finding videos about interesting tech that just came out or is coming soon, so with older stuff we go. I don’t know of any theaters near me that are using fancy and expensive new laser projectors, but if you obsess over image quality, then IMAX is one company that has been putting a focus on it (when they aren’t busy blowing cash on VR that no one plays). Granted, IMAX/theaters needs to do better about volume levels, as I see frequent complaints about people finding movies to be too loud. Here’s IMAX fluff piece on their laser projector tech:

Space Pr0n Of The Week: Hubble Still Has It - I can remember when the Hubble Space Telescope first captured the famous “Deep Field” picture. Focusing on a tiny speck of dark sky, it unveiled thousands of galaxies occupying space millions/billions of light-years away. Since that photo was captured, the Hubble has taken similar photos and is now following up with the Hubble Deep UV (HDUV) Legacy Survey. This survey combines a plethora of observations and different light wavelengths to come up with this stunning canvas that shows around 15,000 galaxies out in the far reaches our our universe. Read more about it here.
