Unnamed sources are reporting that former Trump attorney Michael Cohen is set to plead guilty to federal charges today. These reports are unconfirmed at this time, however, federal prosecutors have stated that Michael Cohen is set to appear in court at 4:00 pm later today.
Michael Cohen’s charges were not previously made public, however court filings show that he was being investigated for fraud. The investigation into Cohen stemmed from nearly $20 million in loans obtained by various taxi businesses owned by Cohen and his family. Cohen’s home, office, and hotel room were raided by the FBI, and over 3.7 million documents were seized. Cohen asserted attorney-client privilege over only a small portion of the documents.
The news comes on the heels of a busy legal day for the Trump administration. Jury deliberations continue in the trial of former Trump campaign official Paul Manafort. The jury told Judge T.S. Ellis earlier today that it was split and unable to reach a consensus on one of the counts Manafort has been charged with. The jury has been deliberating for four days since Thursday.
Paul Manafort has been charged with 18 bank and tax fraud charges from dealings unrelated to his work on the Trump campaign in 2016. Manafort faces a possible life sentence if he is found guilty on all counts.
The sentencing hearing for Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn has been delayed yet again. Flynn plead guilty in December to one count of making false statements to the FBI when questioned about his dealings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition.
This marks the fourth time Flynn’s sentencing has been delayed.
Fox News is reporting that Michael Cohen has reached a deal with the prosecution that includes a guilty plea and 3-5 years of jail time.
There is no cooperation agreement with prosecutors.
