First up, to review what was discussed on Sunday, the actual rendition of the anthem:
This has got to be one of the worst adaptations of the National Anthem performed by a musician in a long time. In what can only be described as a screeching cat attempting to play as a drunk lounge singer, Fergie strains her way through the piece, with some players staring in disbelief at the performance.
The cheers at the end, in my humble opinion, were cheers that the mangled national anthem was finally over.
It was disgraceful and also, in my humble opinion, one of the worst sung national anthems I have ever seen. The artistic interpretations of this magnitude need to stop. When will singers learn that this is not about them or their own personal glory, but for honoring the country?
Fergie also apparently realized her little stunt was over the top, telling TMZ that she tried her best at performing “something special” for the NBA All Stars Game.
“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” Fergie said in a statement to TMZ. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
Her “risk taking” performance was annihilated on social media yesterday evening. It was clear that people did not want a Marilyn Monroe “Happy Birthday Mr. President” redux, as one commenter said last night for the national anthem, they wanted just the national anthem.
