Retail giant Dick’s Sporting Goods announced on Wednesday that they will no longer sell any AR-15 style rifle or any semi-automatic rifles in their stores. Dick’s Sporting Goods will also refuse to sell any firearm to any customer under 21 years of age. These policies will be enacted in all stores nationwide regardless of state and local laws.
We deeply believe that this country’s most precious gift is our children. They are our future. We must keep them safe. Beginning today, DICK’S Sporting Goods is committed to the following: https://t.co/J4OcB6XJnu pic.twitter.com/BaTJ9LaCYe

CEO Edward Stack has admitted that his company’s new policies are a direct result of the horrific mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Valentine’s Day.
In an interview with the New York Times, Stack said, “When we saw what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and upset. We love these kids and their rallying cry, ‘enough is enough.’ It got to us.” Stack also said that store records showed Dick’s had legally sold a gun to Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz in November.
Although Dick’s Sporting Goods is urging lawmakers to enact common-sense gun control regulations, Stack has said that the company still supports the Second Amendment. Dick’s will continue selling other types of firearms.
Absent from Stack’s remarks-and Dick’s new firearm policies-is any explanation as to how these actions will stop future mass shootings. I can understand that Stack would be upset that his company sold a weapon to Cruz in the months leading up to his deadly rampage at Stoneman Douglas High.
Is enacting such draconian restrictions on who can buy guns at your business really the way to go, though? Dick’s has given the appearance that it is punishing all of its loyal, law-abiding customers for the terrible actions of one.
Has Dick’s Sporting Goods made a smart move in enacting these restrictions in their stores? I highly doubt it.
Gun owners are rabidly pro-Second Amendment. They are more politically active than most Americans. Above all, gun owners hate being preached to about gun control. I suspect this move is going to hurt Dick’s a lot more than they think.
After all, there’s always small mom-and-pop gun shops who are happy to legally sell to whoever Dick’s refuses to.
