One of the most surprising things about the shutdown is how the Democrats seem to have bumbled into it without much of a plan. We have been hearing warnings for months now that a shutdown was imminent, but the Democrats seem to have believed that the Republicans would fold as they usually do.
The thing is, the Republicans, perhaps driven by Trump, aren’t sticking to the script:
Democrats are “complicit” in illegal immigrant violent crime and murder so long as they continue blocking funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and hold up negotiations on pro-American immigration reforms, President Trump’s new campaign ad states.
The ad was released a day after Senate Democrats voted to shut down the federal government because the spending bill to keep the government open did not include amnesty for at least 3.5 million illegal aliens, as Breitbart News reported.
Luis Bracamontes, a 37-year-old illegal alien from Mexico who allegedly shot and killed Detective Michael Davis and Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver in October 2017, is featured in the ad, saying in the courtroom during his murder trial that he wished he “had killed more of the motherf*ckers.”
“I will break out soon and I will kill more, kill whoever gets in front of me,” the illegal alien said as he smiled in the courtroom, Breitbart News reported. “There’s no need for a f*cking trial.”
The Democrats’ response to the shutdown has generally been ineffectual fumbling, while the Republicans had brutal ads like this ready to go. It seems like even on the day before the shutdown, it was widely expected Trump and the Republicans would cave.
As NWC noted yesterday in a must-read post, the Democrats had a big poll lead on the generic ballot late last year, but in the wake of the successful Trump tax reform, that poll lead is rapidly collapsing. This shutdown is an unwise move for the Democrats, because it appears Americans largely are not blaming them for it.
I have to admit the weak Democrat response has been a surprise to me; usually, slick public relations, especially given the friendly media, is an area of expertise for them. Their failure to respond effectively is a clear sign of how complacent and ineffectual they have become.
The only real question now is what the Republicans and Trump are going to do with their advantage; it looks to me like so far, they are pressing it.
