#MIGA: Make Iran Great Again

Those of you who where around then and paying attention, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was the Shah of Iran from 1941 to 1979. He was overthrown in 1979 by various Islamist and leftist organizations as well as student movements. The Shah’s regime was known for being oppressive, brutal, likely highly corrupt, and very extravagant. The Shah was perceived as a puppet of the United States.

The SAVAK was the Shah’s Secret Police. It was established with the help of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Israeli MOSSAD and was Iran’s “most hated and feared institution” with a habit of torturing and executing opponents of the regime.

And thus the Islamic Republic under the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, came into being.

For those of you who were stoned during the 1970s or not born yet, here’s how people dressed in Iran until 1979. I’ll admit that the fashions were really ugly back them with awful green colors and disco boots.

But heck! This isn’t cause for a revolution. Well, I guess actually it was.

There is a fair amount of support for the return of the monarchy in Iran to bring back the good parts of western culture that they had incorporated such as woman’s rights.

The heir to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi is his son Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi @PahlaviReza.

He is a Shi’a Muslim and has performed the Hajj to Mecca. He current lives in Baltimore, MD and, no, I don’t know his immigration status! During the recent protests, there were signs and chants to bring back the monarchy under Reza Pahlavi.

Restoring the monarchy is probably a very much long shot but there were 2500 years of continuous Persian monarchy until the Iranian Revolution. That’s a very long time and the history of Persia could perhaps someday be written —

The Persian monarchy celebrates 3000 years of rule broken only by 40 years of a failed theocracy.

Stranger things have happened!
