The office of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has announced that Mr. Lee passed away early Tuesday morning at age 65:
Appointed mayor by the Board of Supervisors in 2011 to replace Mayor Gavin Newsom, Lee won reelection in 2015. Lee was known as a major supporter of San Francisco’s controversial “sanctuary city” policy, which became a major news and political story in particular during the last two years of Lee’s tenure after the death of Kate Steinle at the hands of a five-time deportee.
“It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:11 a.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. Family, friends and colleagues were at his side,” his office said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family.”
London Breed, the Board of Supervisors president, will become the city’s acting mayor.
Mayor Lee was an ultra Dem liberal who continued the policies of past SF mayors. These lib mayors have led to SF being no more than a haven for the homeless who inhabit the streets across the city. People who do not live in the city dread going there, and are in a state of fear of being accosted when they do visit the city.
London Breed, President of the Board of Supervisors, is the acting mayor until new elections can be held. She holds just as liberal of beliefs as Ed Lee, and in fact was even more liberal than him in many areas.
Breed’s top concerns are:
- building and protecting affordable housing,
- increasing public safety,
- improving environmental health,
- modernizing public transportation
Derf Butler, a SF businessman, has been recorded in FBI investigations as “paying for access” to Breed in a public corruption and bid-fixing investigation. Breed had denied all allegations and claims. No apparent actions were taken resulting from the investigations.
