Facebook Discovers “Fake News” Tag Makes People MORE Inclined to Believe an Article
To no one’s surprise, people don’t like censorship by the government, and censorship by corporations such as Facebook who are acting as proxies for the government. Any news article tagged by Facebook as “FAKE NEWS” is likely to convince people that it’s not being tagged “fake news” because it’s fake, but because Facebook and the governments it acts as a proxy for don’t want you reading it.
Censorship NEVER works once the population at large figures out they are being censored, unless you reach a level of totalitarian oppression where people are routinely jailed and killed for having the wrong ideas. It just makes the forbidden ideas more sexy and desirable for people to consume. When are governments going to figure this out?
Business Insider UK reports that Facebook will no longer be marking news stories with a “disputed” tag, a measure introduced this year in an attempt to crack down on “fake news” on their platform. The tag was meant to make Facebook users question the source of the information they were reading, however, most users seemed to double down on believing the information in “disputed” articles due to the tag assigned by Facebook.
In another post published on the blogging platform Medium by three Facebook staffers working to prevent the spread of what they consider to be fake news on the platform, the staffers explained that giving more context to stories led to a sharp drop in the spread of allegedly fake news and that adding related articles to a disputed story was more effective than just branding it with a tag.
Facebook is trying to carefully walk the line and avoid censorship which is too obviously heavy-handed. However, SJWs are going to keep pressuring the company to purge all conservative users from the platform, as Twitter is busy doing. This is not the end of Facebook’s censorship attempts by a long shot.
