Every single member on the security council including our “allies” in the United Kingdom, France, and Japan, voted to block the United States from deciding where to put their own embassy.
The vote was 14-1, with the United States representative Nikki Haley the lone vote against the resolution. As the United States is a permanent security council representative, it has veto rights over any resolution and quashed the move immediately.
Nikki Haley issued a strong statement immediately after the vote, saying that the United States will be taking names and will not be told by any country where the United States can put their embassy.
She did not win any friends on the international stage, but she won them back home, which is where this counts.
Watch the US vs. the World beatdown delivered by Nikki Haley:
The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, says a resolution calling for the withdrawal of Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is ‘an insult which will not be forgotten’.
Now that Nikki Haley has reported back, Trump has a list of countries that voted against the United States at the security council. Trump issued a statement both defending Nikki Haley and issuing a new threat.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
The 193-member U.N. General Assembly on Thursday this week will hold an emergency special session to address this issue.
This session is convened at the urging of Muslim countries, who have petitioned the United Nations to vote on a draft resolution from Egypt’s government that decried the decision by the United States to move its embassy to Jerusalem.
The 15 member security council already voted on the resolution on Monday, which the United States’ representative Nikki Haley vetoed.
The resolution stated that the world community expresses “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.”
Trump issued a threat today that the United States may revoke financial aid to foreign governments that vote against the United States interests at the United Nations.
“I like the message that Nikki sent yesterday at the United Nations, for all those nations that take our money and then they vote against us at the Security Council, or they vote against us potentially at the assembly,” Trump said.
Reuters claimed that an anonymous muslim diplomat said of Haley’s letter: “States resort to such blatant bullying only when they know they do not have a moral or legal argument to convince others.”
