ArcadeHero’s post below has some details about the new XBox One X console, which is due to be released tomorrow. Not to be outdone, Sony has indicated that its successor system to the PS4 is likely to be announced soon:
It’s no secret that Sony will release a PS4 successor in what we assume will be called PS5 at some point in the not too distance future.
Shawn Layden – Chairman of Worldwide Studios and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment America – confirmed earlier this year with German website Golem that a PS5 “is coming” but it will “probably be some time” before it’s released.
But a very interesting new VG247 article posted following their time at Sony’s Paris Games Week showcase has hinted that we could be seeing the swan song of the PlayStation 4 and the first steps for Sony’s eventual PS5 release.
“There was a feeling that we’ve popped through the mid-generation malaise in 2017, and 2018 and the following year are where we’ll get the killer releases that will define the PS4 era,” wrote VG247.
“There’s an expectation among media, developers speaking in hushed tones and a glint in the eyes of execs that 2019 will see the roll-out of the PS4 successor, with Microsoft likely to follow with its new console a year later.”
The piece comes after VR and AR intelligence firm Greenlight Insights estimated that Sony had sold 1.5 million PlayStation VR headsets through October 2017.
Rough estimates place Sony’s revenue at somewhere close to $525 million in hardware alone, with software revenue-boosting that number even further.
