Reality Still Not a Winner
I’ve done a bit of classified work in my day so I’ve had more than a passing interest in the Reality Winner case. As I’m sure you recall, Winner was an Air Force veteran who worked for Pluribus International Corporation, a firm that provides contracting services to the National Security Agency. She has been held without bond since her arrest in June for allegedly violating the federal Espionage Act. She has pleaded not guilty.
The document she leaked to a web site describes Russian spearfishing cyberattacks aimed at a U.S. voting software supplier [Note 1]
“I saw the article and was like, I don’t understand why this isn’t a thing,” she said. “It made me very mad … I guess I just didn’t care about myself at that point. … Yeah, I screwed up royally.”
After first denying that she had removed any documentation, she ultimately admitted that she did so by bringing it out “folded in half in my pantyhose.”
In the recent bail hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Brian Epps denied bail partially on evidence that her leak was premeditated. Before her discharge, she allegedly searched the Internet to find out what could happen if a thumb drive was inserted in a top-secret computer and then did so for two minutes. The judge also noted that examinations of her electronic devices indicated that she had researched how to send information anonymously to news outlets.
“The timing strongly suggests (Winner) was planning to leak classified information from the outset of her NSA employment, while all the while swearing allegiance to the United Sates and promising to safeguard its national secrets,” Epps wrote.
Her trial is currently scheduled for March 2018.
In other news, her Kosher vegan lifestyle seems to be somewhat at odds with the cuisine offered in jail and has ‘suffered health problems.’ You’ll be glad to know she is receiving medication to aid in her digestion.
In another indication that maybe she’s not nearly as bright as she thinks she is, she also admitted to taking classified material in a phone call from jail to her mother and sister. Guess what? THE CALL WAS RECORDED! Dum dum! There’s a life lesson for you. If you’re ever in jail suspected of espionage, don’t talk about it on the jail telephone!
One other tidbit is that her attorneys are arguing that other “leakers” such as General David Petraeus did much worse and were released on bond. This didn’t work any better for her than the Hillary Defense worked for the Navy sailor who was jailed for photos he took on board a submarine. Sometimes, kiddies, life is not fair and RHIP!
[Note 1: Or the smoking gun that conclusively demonstrates that Donald Trump colluded with the Russians depending on which news outlet you believe! My guess is that it’s a recipe for Knish and she just translated it wrong.]
