“Where is your God now?”
A nasty, hateful refrain covering the twittersphere from lefties attacking Trump supporters in Texas who also got hit by hurricane Harvey, and also a short-sighted, ignorant, foolish remark which indicates not only a lack of compassion for their fellow-man, but a complete dearth of understanding of who God is and what he does.
Allow me to answer that inane, nonsensical query.
Newsflash: God does not work for you.
He doesn’t work for me either.
Yes, that’s right. God isn’t some magical pill you take every morning and Presto! all your problems are gone.
What God wants is to declare his glory to the nations. You say, “Come on! Are you saying God is some sort of egomaniac?” Well…KINDA, YEAH! If anyone was justified in being that, God is. And as much as possible, He likes to use the Saints to help him share his glory. And by Saints I mean His children. He wants us to be part of that.
God is more interested in your HEART than he is your comfort and convenience.
Throughout the Bible God did amazing things to get the attention of His people. Often these acts forced His people to make certain adjustments. These adjustments were not always comfortable. Hurricane Harvey and Irma are definitely NOT comfortable. But look who is bringing up God all of a sudden! That’s right, the atheists and skeptics are AWARE of God. How can you look at the massive, horrible destructiveness of a Cat 5.5 hurricane and not see God?
He is making Himself known in this big event, for sure, and look what’s happening.
People are coming together and helping each other in this crisis. People have lost homes, property, lives. And yet thousands (millions?) have pitched in to help in some way. You, the skeptic, ask, “Where is your God now?” and you laugh raucously. But God is revealing Himself through US, through those who persevere and seek to do GOOD in times that are BAD. When WE respond to adversity in a way that glorifies God, we please Him. Are you getting this?
Mark 4:36 talks about a big storm that hit Jesus and the disciples in the midst of a boat. During that storm, the disciples, experienced fishermen, were undoubtedly baling water as fast as they could, yet the boat was filling with water anyway. It was BAD. And Jesus was in the back of the boat asleep on a pillow. The disciples woke him up, yelling, “Master! Don’t you care that we are about to die?”
Jesus stood up and silenced the storm. All was calm. At that moment the disciples marveled, saying, “Who is this man, that even the wind and waves obey him?” Right then, they learned something about Jesus they did not already know.
In the midst of this storm, God is revealing Himself through us, in multiple ways. He’s showing His majesty and power in a way that cannot be denied. And He is also showing His people that no matter what is going on around us, we are in the best position when we are seeking God and asking Him what He wants.
And what does God want?
He wants your HEART. He wants you to want Him. He wants to be your Father, not just your Judge. But God doesn’t owe any of us anything. Jesus said, “As long as you are in this world you will have trouble.” The next time you wonder “Why me, God?” Just remember, it’s not all about you. And the less you make it about you and the more you make it about Him, the more true, lasting PEACE you will have, regardless of what happens in this world.
