Anyone seen “Mad Dog” Mattis Lately?
Back in the good old days when there was still debate about whether the mainstream media leaned to the left, we’d get reports of what was happening on the battlefield with actual information. And then the news presenter (it’s a much better term than ‘anchor’) would say something like “And this shows why the U.S. military is stupid and how the country is going to hell in a hand basket.” But at least there was some news element to it
Today, here’s what amounts to news on Secretary of Defense Mattis:
- Mattis Quietly Keeps Distance From Trump’s Most Divisive Moves
- Trump delegates troop decisions, to praise and concern
- MATTIS, NOT TRUMP, IS NOW IN CHARGE OF AMERICA’S MILITARY MIGHT
- Mattis Declines To Suck Up To Trump, Praises Troops Instead
- Mattis turned down White House calls to go on ‘Fox & Friends’: report
- Mattis: ‘We are not winning in Afghanistan’ (Well, duh! And who do we have to blame for that?)
On Afghanistan, John McCain helpfully added “We’re now six months into this administration. We still haven’t got a strategy for Afghanistan. It makes it hard for us to support you when we don’t have a strategy. We know what the strategy was for the last eight years: Don’t lose.” McCain also said “I was confident that within the first 30 to 60 days we would have a strategy from which to start working. So, all I can tell you is that unless we get a strategy from you, you’re going to get a strategy from us.” Thank you so very much, Senator McCain, for your support. Idiot.
As near as I can tell, no one is asking the Secretary of Defense much of anything that’s insightful and when they do, he deflects rather adroitly. This may be an instance where having so much attention on President Trump may actually work in his favor so he can concentrate on actually getting things done.
As with so much today, we learn more from Twitter about what someone believes is important than from any news outlet (except here, of course.) So let’s look at a few:
May 29. John Dickerson, CBS News asked Secretary Mattis: “what keeps you awake at night”? #MADDOG “Nothing keeps me awake at night, I keep other people awake”
June 7: “Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.” #Jesus http://bible.com/1/pro.13.6.kjv
June 12: #USA is at war against #terrorists. We are at war with #satan. #satan is a coward and he will be defeated. #ISIS are of the #devil & losers!
Yowzer! That seriously looks like actual news. So who the heck is this Brett McGurk guy? He is the Special Presidential Envoy for Global Coalition to Counter ISIS. He was appointed in 11/13/2015.
You mean there are good things happening in Iraq? How did that happen? I’m not sure whether Mr. Gurk would be someone you’d classify as being in the “deep state,” but if he is, I have a feeling that he’s one of the patriots you hope are actually there!
On May 19, Secretary Mattis was quoted as saying “[President Trump] directed a tactical shift, from shoving ISIS out of safe locations in an attrition fight, to surrounding the enemy in their strongholds so we can annihilate ISIS.” He continued that “by taking the time to deconflict, to surround and then attack, we carry out the annihilation campaign so we don’t simply transplant this problem from one location to another.”
I like the word “annihilate.” AN·NI·HI·LATE. It has a really nice ring to it. I have the feeling that there won’t be much of a need for ISIS fighter criminal defense attorneys! And if they want to close Gitmo, I think we can safely do that now because there’s not going to be a need to put anyone there.
It kinda makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
