Per the AP, it looks like it’s happening:
President Donald Trump is expected to pull the United States from a landmark global climate agreement, a White House official said Wednesday, though there could be “caveats in the language” announcing a withdrawal, leaving open the possibility that his decision isn’t final.
Exiting the deal would be certain to anger allies that spent years negotiating the accord to reduce carbon emissions.
The official insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the decision before the official announcement.
Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning: “I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
While Trump currently favors an exit from the agreement, he has been known to change his thinking on major decisions and tends to seek counsel from a range of inside and outside advisers, many with differing agendas, until the last minute.
My take on all this: Trump kept us in the agreement initially as part of a plan to make a deal of some kind with the EU, probably on NATO spending. I think Merkel arrogantly told him to get bent with regards to increasing spending and meeting Germany’s commitments, and Trump said “No deal on spending? No deal on climate.” That’d be my guess on why things between him and Merkel soured so much after the Europe trip, and why he suddenly wants us to pull out.
