It’s been widely argued that the “real” reasons ESPN is losing viewers is due to changing ways in which viewers watch TV. Younger viewers are moving away from expensive cable TV packages, and towards newer services such as Amazon, Netflix and Hulu. Economically stressed customers are “cutting the cord.” Adult viewership of TV is down across the board as well, with people watching less TV than ever before in favor of consuming media in other ways.
It definitely doesn’t have anything to do with the network’s transformation into a platform for extreme left wing politics that constantly injects politics into sports and ruins one of the few remaining escapes people have for escaping politics. The public editor even said a few weeks ago that its viewers LOVE left wing politics and that injecting extreme left political content into sports is what all its viewers want to see.
Deep Root Analytics begs to differ with this silly statement:
We analyzed viewership data in a large media market in a swing state (Cincinnati, OH) for the entirety of 2015 and 2016. Also, to control for any changes in partisan identification between 2015 and 2016, Deep Root Analytics analyzed viewership among the same audiences across both years.
In our analysis, a clear trend emerges: ESPN’s viewership in this key swing state market became less Republican during 2016.
Specifically, in 2015, the ESPN audience on average skewed Republican across all dayparts, ranging from 12% more Republican (Early News, Late Fringe, Overnight) to 21% more Republican than Democratic (Early Morning).
In 2016, every daypart on ESPN became less conservative, with Daytime being only 2% more Republican than Democratic, while Late Fringe and Overnight programming became 10% and 12% more Democratic than Republican – a 22 and 28 point shift, respectively.
As several of us have been saying since this blog started, if a company has social justice warriors running it, you may want to sell that stock. The fact of the matter is that SJWs are political fanatics, the modern-day American equivalent of the religious fanatic, and are happy to ruin their companies and the lives of their employees for The Cause.
Since the people at ESPN and their left wing boosters are dishonest liars, we will probably never know exactly how much impact the injection of lefty politics has had, but Deep Root gave us a very good clue. The people at ESPN will never admit this truth since SJWs are allergic to any truth which would make them look bad. Instead, they’d rather blow up the company, since they think that preaching their bizarre, creepy religious beliefs is more important than running their business competently and making money.
Sacrificing one’s livelihood and business is seen as a great and noble thing and a top-tier form of left-wing virtue signalling, and the best part for these SJW CEOs is that they get to float away with tens of millions on golden parachutes while their employees go to the unemployment line.
